School of Languages & Linguistics German, Russian & Swedish

Welcome

Welcome to German, Russian and Swedish Studies within the School of Languages and Linguistics in the Faculty of Arts, we offer opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate study in language and culture in the European languages of German, Swedish and Russian.

Our language courses cater for all levels from absolute beginners to advanced levels of competence. Language courses are complemented by a dynamic and constantly evolving array of subjects in cultural studies (including literature studies and various fields of linguistics).

We offer subjects on topics as diverse as the East German secret police, German intellectual history and philosophy, German as a Foreign Language, 19th and 20th century literature, gender studies, German-Jewish relations, German popular culture and music, Russian linguistics and Nordic languages and society.

Staff in the German, Russian and Swedish section are actively involved in research and have broad research strengths in sociolinguistics and contemporary German culture and literature. We are committed to research-led teaching and foster a vibrant research culture, which can be seen in the healthy numbers of honours and postgraduate students our section continues to attract. As a small section, where most teaching is done in small groups, we pride ourselves on offering students a more personalised experience.

There are opportunities for students to study abroad and go on exchanges to Germany, Sweden, Austria, the Ukraine and Russia where they can advance their language skills and deepen their knowledge of the history, culture and society of the language they are taking through university study.
